360 degrees of Australian computing innovation

The goal of this workshop is to celebrate Australian innovation and creativity in computing, taking stock of past achievements and looking to the future.

Australia has a proud history of developing innovative computing solutions and exploiting them for national and international benefit. Notable examples include: CSIRAC, the world’s third digital computer, WiFi, which underpins a global wireless world, Google Maps and the cochlear implant, to name a few.

This workshop will deliver presentations on some of these major innovations and will run as a track of ACSW 2027, to be held at ANU in Feb 2027. It will celebrate 80 years since Pearcey and Beard commenced CSIR Mark1 design, 70 Years since CSIRAC relaunched in Melbourne, 50 years ACSW and 30 years of CSIRAC resurrection.

The talks will also highlight the Pearcey Virtual National Museum project, an initiative to build a portal to the physical and virtual collections held in Australian institutions.
